We saw The Wolf of Wall Street movie on the weekend and it got me thinking about our industry. BTW, only go to this movie if you are not adverse to copious quantities of sex, drugs, greed and debauchery.
The movie was a true story about Jorden Belfort who made millions on Wall Street selling the idea of wealth in shady stock trades. Ultimately, he went to prison (although the movie even glamorized that).
The reason he was so successful, is the reason why many “get rich quick schemes” are born. People want to buy into the dream.
I am a big fan of wealth. My book is called The Wealthy Speaker, so of course I want everyone to succeed. But where I draw the line is telling people that it’s going to be quick and easy.
I have a client who has gone from zero to nearly $1M in 3 years, but he is the exception, not the rule. People who you see out there making millions likely did a lot of ground work before they made it to the top of the mountain.
When someone asks me if I think they will make it, I have a choice. I could answer “The Wolf Way” and sell them on the fabulous lifestyle they will have when they are jet setting around the world speaking.
Or, I could answer my way. Yes, you can make it, but you’re going to need to take action and do the right things consistently.
The Wolf has some admirable sales and motivational qualities. So if you are in the market for a quick path to more bookings at higher fees, BUYER BEWARE.
See you soon Wealthy Speakers!
